Do you know what nails are?
You may have painted them thousands of times, even bitten them to trim them. But you may also not know what exactly nails are. Well, nails are mostly made up of dead cells that have hardened and contain keratin. Keratin is a fibrous protein that is composed mostly of sulfur. Keratin is present in many parts of our body. For example in the hair and even in the eyes. In the rest of the vertebrate animals it is also present in the horns and feathers. This protein is manufactured naturally in our body. Do you know where the greatest contribution of this substance comes from? Of the bones!
Nails help us protect the distal regions of the hands and feet. It has a convex shape and depending on the person they are more or less hard naturally. In general, nails grow at a different rate according to each person. But as a common rule, it is usual for a nail to grow approximately four millimeters each month. If you have an accident, for example, if you catch your nail with something and it falls out, your fingernails take about eight months to fully grow. If it happens to you with your toenails, they take a little longer to grow. About a year or a year and a half. However, you may grow a little faster. In my case, for example, that I had an accident on one foot, it took me about nine months for my big toe to grow. It all depends on different factors. For example, age, the season of the year, hereditary factors and the amount of calcium available to your body. In general, however, fingernails grow about four times faster than toenails. If they are not cut properly they can reach a truly considerable size. In Japan, for example, women left their nails very long and these could occupy more than five centimeters.
At the medical level, nails are used as a way to diagnose various problems or diseases.
The care of fingernails is known under the term manicure. However, the care dedicated to toenails is known as pedicure. Both manicure and pedicure also treat the rest of the limb, not just the nail.

Instructions for caring for nails
- Eat healthy. As with our hair or any other part of the body, if we want our nails to look beautiful it is necessary to eat well. If you have a poor diet this will be reflected in your nails. The best way to show off a heart attack nail is to consume foods rich in vitamins A and B. Getting strong nails is easy if you increase your intake of cereals (at breakfast or in the form of bread), carrots, nuts, almonds, red peppers or tomatoes. Don’t forget calcium! Take foods rich in calcium to improve the quality of your nails. Cheeses, yogurts or milk are an inexhaustible source of calcium. You can also find it in other foods and even to a greater extent than in dairy. For example in chickpeas, spinach, cabbage, squid or canned sardines.
- Protect the nails so that they are always perfect. External aggressions are lethal to the appearance of our nails. If you want to have beautiful nails protect them from external agents whenever you can. For example, don’t scrub without gloves and wear special gloves for gardening, DIY, and other activities that may spoil them.
- Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. Most of our body is made up of water. And this is one of the main reasons why we need to have adequate hydration. If you do not drink enough water it will be noticeable throughout your body. In addition to drinking at least a liter and a half of water a day, you can moisturize your nails directly. An excellent trick for your nails to hydrate naturally is to bathe them in olive oil. Immerse them in some of this repairing liquid for about five minutes. Ideally, you should use virgin olive oil or extra virgin olive oil for this treatment. The reason is that these oils retain all the natural properties compared to those that are not virgin. After five minutes massage the nails well so that they absorb as much as possible the oil and its rich nutrients. If you want to finish this treatment with a trick to harden them even more, apply a little castor oil on them. It is excellent for your nails to be a little harder. You can perform this restorative treatment every fortnight or every month. Depending on your tastes and needs.
- Do not forget the cuticles. Many people, when they think about taking care of their hands, remember the nails but forget about the cuticles. A great trick to keep your cuticles hydrated is to apply moisturizer. It does not need to be any special cream. Simply, when you pour hand cream, remember to insist on the cuticle area. Massage them gently with the cream so that it absorbs it well. Also, when you are going to do some treatment at home for the nails, remember to soften the cuticles before starting to treat them. You can do it with olive oil or with a special product for the cuticles. In no case cut the cuticles. This is only necessary if you find a stepparent. In the rest of the cases you should not do it.
- Trim your nails or clean them frequently. No more biting your nails. You should never do it again. It is best to use a nail clipper or a file. If you want to keep them a little long but shape them and reduce their size, nothing better than the lime. However, if you want to trim them and change your look, use the nail clipper. To properly cut the nails it is convenient to follow the shape of the cuticles. This is the natural shape of your nails. In case of babies or very young children it is advisable to cut the nails with a square shape and not round. In this way you will avoid that the nails are nailed.

COUNCILS
Curiosities about the nail. Do you know what part they are composed of externally?
If you look you will probably have noticed that fingernails and toenails have a very particular shape. Many of our fingers have a kind of crescent at the base of the nail. Do you know what each of the parts of the nail is called? Let’s explain it to you below.
- Nail body. This is the technical name that our nails receive. The entire nail itself is the nail body.
- Matrix or root. The root is the point from which the nail is born. In its lower part it is located under the skin. From here it grows upwards and approaches the fingertips.
- Lunula. Before we talked about the crescent that we have in some of our fingers. Well, this is the technical name of this part of the nail. This part is born from the root of the nail and is more or less pronounced on the fingers. You don’t always have a lunula on every nail. In my case, for example, it is only present in the thumb, index finger and heart. The color is different from the rest of the nail because this part is composed of living tissue.
- Nail bed. The finger connects with the nail or nail body thanks to this tissue. A kind of viscous tissue that acts as a “glue” between the nail and the finger.
- This tissue serves to protect the nail bed from infections.
- Have you noticed that little fold of the sides of our nails? Right where the finger and nail meet. Well, this fold is technically known as paronniquio.
- The fold that is located at the root of the nail, just where the nail body is born, is known under the name of eponychium.
