Everything ‘vintage’ comes back. The bell pants of the last century became fashionable, later the straws, then corduroy clothes returned and even hats are worn in the style of ‘cow boy’. With movements it is the same as with clothes, which after a few decades, always come back.
The hippie movement had its peak in the 60s under the slogan ‘peace and love’. It was born in the United States and was based on pacifism and a form of protest against politics. His style was very marked, with long hair, the occasional dreadlock, somewhat worn clothes and a seemingly untidy look.
Currently the hippie style is worn again, but it is no longer so much a form of vindication (although in some cases it is), but a style of dress and a way of life. If you liked the sesentero movement and want to recover it, here are some steps to know how to be a hippie.
Instructions for being a hippie
- He appears to be a hippie. Hippies have long hair, so it’s important that you let it grow. The longer the better, since hippies always used to wear some kind of complement in their hair that looked better because their hair was long.
- Feel like a hippie. Being a hippie is a lifestyle and for this you must put yourself on the wave of what the sixties were. Search the Internet for music from the time and the movement and download it.
- It’s important that you also know what the hippie movement was, why it came about, and everything it meant. The more information you have and the more you know, the easier it will be for you to feel like a real hippie, since it was a revolutionary movement.
- If you are a girl, join the fashion of accessories in your hair. Headbands, flowers, everything you can think of, and the more floral prints they have much better.
- Go shopping. There are shops specializing in clothes from different eras. Look for some of them and go renew your wardrobe. Hippie clothing was based on being tight dresses with flight, in wide-legged and sagging pants and floral shirts and with many prints. You may not want to add all this to your outfit, but you do want something to be a real hippie.
- Hippie ideals. The hippies tried not to pollute anything, they respected the environment and others. So what you should do is start recycling, if you don’t already. It is important that at home you have several containers, one of organic food and another of paper, since the glass as it is usually in smaller quantity you can throw it directly to the containers of the street. Start thinking like a hippie and that your actions can harm the environment. If you go out or go to a park to eat, take your own bag of waste to throw everything you are going to throw there. If you walk on the street do not throw away cigarette butts or waste and try to produce as little garbage as you can. For hippies the environment is very important, because it is the environment in which they move and in which they feel most comfortable, so you must respect it.
- Feel the outdoors. The movement was based on the liberation of people, it meant a before and after in history, and that is why hippies love the outdoors, not being locked up and not always being in the same places. Meet your friends and go out to a park to enjoy nature.
- Meet people. To better integrate you into this movement it is important that you meet more people who also share these ideals. You can search for forums online and go to hangouts. Or you may already know hippie people. Go out all together and share opinions.
- Hippies have a jargon of their own. They use words to identify themselves as ‘cat’, so it’s important that you know, if not all, some of the words hippies use so that, if you go out with groups of people in the environment, you don’t feel out of place.
- Peace and love. Hippies go against violence and war, so fight against anything that jeopardizes the slogan of ‘peace and love’. They are people who respect and who do not like injustices.
- They are people committed to the world, so you could join an NGO to continue helping. It could be in defense of abused animals or one that you feel most identified with, taking into account hippie ideals.
- Live the color. Black and white are almost forbidden colors for hippies. So whatever you wear, dye yourself in colors. Think about the rainbow when dressing and the more colors you wear at once, the better. Hippies are people who are easily recognized precisely by their clothing, the striking colors are part of the total look and is what defines them.
- Get cool glasses. The typical glasses of small and round crystals were the top in the sixties. As everything ‘vintage’ returns, now many stores have them, or in any store that is dedicated to the fashion of this era. Get one of them and live the movement.
- Dye your room colored. Hippies were characteristic for the flags and banners they made. For you to be a real hippie you don’t have to go out on the street with banners, but you could decorate your room or your house with style. The symbol of peace on a banner or the occasional flower with a striking slogan will make you feel a little more hippie.
- Change your eating habits. Most hippies are vegetarians and have their explanation because they defend the environment and animals, so they do not consider it logical to eat anything that comes from them. Even more than vegetarians, they are based on organic foods, which come from the land and have even been planted by them. Do it little by little, you can try first with fruits and vegetables and then launch into making your own garden.
- Do yoga. The hippies seemed to always be in a state of permanent tranquility. That’s because they believed in energies and spirituality and in being able to contact the afterlife. Doing relaxation exercises or even yoga will make you feel better about yourself, especially more at peace, and you will get that state of tranquility that characterized them.
- Forget about chemicals. They respect nature, so forget about makeup that carries chemicals and hygiene products. Many of them are tested on animals, something that hippies are totally against.
- Go to hippie festivals. This way you will meet people and you will know how the rest of the hippies act. This is recommended if you have just become involved in this movement, and if you have been involved in this movement for years, go to festivals as well. In them you will feel at home and share tastes with people from the same environment.
- Tune your car. Just like with your room or your home or your workspace. It’s your own environment, so adapt it to your style. Do not exaggerate much because in Spain you can not decorate the cars externally as in the US, for example, but you can put some sticker and do with the interior what you want.
Tips for being a hippie
- Being a hippie is a lifestyle based on respect, liberation and nature. If you only like the movement for the style when dressing, forget it, because you will never end up being a real hippie. However, if you feel the movement as a way of fighting and protesting against the system and want to respect as much as you are respected, this is your movement: the hippie.
- You may find yourself a little lost at first if you haven’t had a closeness to the sesentero movement before, but give yourself time. It will take you a while to adapt but everything comes.
- Meet other people who share the movement. You will be able to listen to each other and exchange information and doubts. In addition, it is always good to have people around who think in a way close to yours.
- To have organic products you could prepare your own garden in the garden or try it in a few pots. For this you need fertilizer and seeds of what you want to plant. You can try tomatoes and potatoes, for example, and water and take care of them until you see your fruits and if they have gone well, risk with more vegetables.
- Ask your parents. They surely lived that movement and part of their youth was being hippies. Ask them what the time was like, what they did, where they bought clothes… who knows if you can even dress in something they wore, more hippie than that, impossible. The tips will help you if you are a little lost and thus you will know the story better than reading it on the Internet.
